This Lodge 5 Quart Dutch Oven has been so good to us that we bought two! While others might suggest a larger size, we find the 5 Quart to force our loaves to grow UP instead of out to create beautiful, robust artisan round loaves.

Here is a majority of what we found useful to start our Sourdough journey. I still use these supplies, hundreds of loaves later.

We found these bread slings to be lifesavers. Place the proofed dough on top of the sling, then score your dough, and effortless lower the dough into the Dutch Oven, sparing your hands and cutting the time your oven door is open. Some use parchment paper instead, but cooking at 450 degrees means parchment paper might not be your safest bet.

Included in the Supply Set, is a scoring tool, however we did not feel we had enough control while scoring. Without any tool to hold the razors, our fingers were taking a beating. Furthermore, with kids around we wanted to be extra cautious. This scoring tool gives us all the control we need for confident cutting while also prioritizing safety. You won't regret it.

When we first started making bread, we practiced with a lot of loaves. We couldn't possibly have kept all that bread so we gifted bread to friends and family who were wonderful taste testers. Now, we use those same bags to sell our bread in.

When beginning your Sourdough journey you will want to take temperatures of everything until you know other signs to look for. You will want to take the temperature of the dough to see if it has "proofed" enough and you will want to temp the bread to see if it's fully cooked. If you already have a reliable kitchen thermometer with a long probe, you're all set.

We have seen and heard horror stories of Sourdough ruining drains, pipes, sinks, and dishwashers. Whatever you do, do not let Sourdough down your drain! With that said, you will be cleaning starter jars and dough bins so traces of sourdough feel inevitable. This mesh strainers helps us clean with a peace of mind knowing that we are keeping our pipes clear.

We firmly believe that a Chef's best tool is their hands. Because of that, we've come to realize that Sourdough is STICKY and the dough sticks less to the gloves than to our hands.

We strongly recommended using weight as your measurement whether it's for your starter or your dough. This kitchen scale is basic, but gets the job done while you're measuring water and flour in grams!

Having a wide mouth starter jar will make for easier mixing, scraping, and cleaning. Also, a full quart is a great size so your starter will have space to double in size. Lastly, you will want two jars so you can have a clean jar at your disposal.
